Cora Maker Services Held Sunday

Mrs. Cora Maker of Shiner died at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, 1986 at her residence after an illness of some duration. She suffered injuries from a fall in August of last year, from which she never fully recovered.

Cora Berckenhoff Maker, the eldest of three children, was born August 4, 1904 in Shiner, daughter of Albert Joseph "A.J." and Augusta (Eschenburg) Berckenhoff, natives respectively of the Mulberry, Lavaca County, and Middle Creek, Fayette County, communities. She was reared in the family home in Shiner, and attended the Shiner Public School, graduating with the class of 1922. She also attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio.

On Sept. 12, 1927, she was married to Leon L. Maker at the home of her parents with the Rev. L. P. Netardus officiating. The couple made their home in Shiner, where they were engaged in raising cattle and she, with her husband, owned and operated the Palace Theatre for almost 40 years. Her husband died Sept. 24, 1960. Following his death, she continued to operate the theatre for some six years.

Mrs. Maker was a member of the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner.

Rosary was recited at Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner Saturday, June 21 at 8 p.m., led by the Rev. Patrick Fidgeon.

Funeral services were held at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 22 with Father Fidgeon officiating.

Darryl Kalich served as lector and altar attendants were Bobby Kneifel, Patrick and Steven Patek.

Burial followed in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were his [sic] brother-in-law, Ewald Effenberger of Edna; a cousin, Kermit Eschenburg of Kenedy; neighbors and friends, Dr. R.J. Wagner, Henry Kalich, Carl Goerte, and Victor Kneifel, all of Shiner.

Surviving are her twin sisters, Miss Florine Berckenhoff of Shiner, Mrs. Ewald (Earline) Effenberger of Edna; two nieces, Miss Cynthia Effenberger of San Antonio; Mrs. Patrick (Sara) Doerning of Alexandria, Va.; and a nephew, Michael Effenberger of Houston.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Nov. 22, 1945; and her mother, May 1, 1965.
