The sudden death of Eugene J. "Bubba" Fischner of Shiner came as a profound shock to his many friends and relatives as well as his immediate family.
He was stricken suddenly at his home in Shiner ad rushed to the Shiner Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:00 m. Friday, October 6, 1978 at the age of 63 years, 5 months and 3 days.
The body lay in state at the Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner, until 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 1978, when it was conveyed to the Shiner Catholic Church. Holy Mass followed at 2:00 p.m. offered by the Rev. Eugene Janson.
Burial took place in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Serving, as pallbearers were fellow members of the Knights of Columbus Shiner Council, Grand Knight Paul Raaz, Jerry Mikes, Oscar Fisseler, Jim Chotenovsky, Erwin Schneider, and Joseph J. Strauss, all of Shiner.
Rosary was recited at the Buffington Chapel Saturday, October 7, at 8:00 p.m. by the parish and Knights of Columbus. By the Rev. Patrick Fidgeon.
Eugene Joseph Fischner, the eldest of four children, was born, May 3, 1915 at Shiner, Lavaca County, Texas, son of Arthur and Frieda (Pohler) Fischnar, natives, of respectively of Industry, Austin County, and Komensky, Lavaca County, Texas.
He was reared in Shiner and attended school here, graduating with class of 1934 from Shiner High School.
In 1926, the family went to make their home with his uncle, Hugo Pohler, Sr. and his two infant sons, Hugo Jr. and Roy Pohler, after Mrs. Pohler died in August 1926.
After graduation he worked with his uncle at the Palace Café until 1938 when he went to Houston and acquired employment with a Weingarten store. On November 6, 1938, he was married to Emily Drabeck, at Queen of Peace Church in Houston by the Rev. Lux.
In 1942 during World War II, Mr. Fischner joined the US Air Force and served at various bases in Texas, including Aloe Field, Victoria; Webb AFB, Big Springs and Randolph Field in San Antonio were he was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Corporal.
He worked at Tex Tan for a brief time before returning to Weingarten's in Houston where he worked over 30 years. He retired in 1977 and moved with his wife back to Shiner.
He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, member of Knights of Columbus and the Shiner American Legion Post. Legion members formed an honor guard at the service.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Mrs. Emily Fischner of Shiner, two brothers Burnell and Arthur Fischnar of Porter.
His father July 3, 1941; his mother, February 22, 194' and an only sister, Fay Fischner, 23, July 25, 1944, preceded him in death
