John Garfield Jewell, 62, former State Senator from Richmond County, NC in the 1939 session of the General Assembly, died in local hospital Wednesday April 2, 1947 at 4 pm following a short illness. He was a retired conductor of the Seaboard Airline Railroad. He retired six years ago. Funeral services will be held Friday April 4, 1947 at 4 pm at Hamlet United Methodist Church where he was a member. Rev J.J. Boone, assisted by Rev R. B. Cuthbertson will conduct the funeral. The body will remain at Pate's Funeral Home until 3 pm Friday April 4, 1947 when it will be taken to the church. Interment will be in Mary Love Cemetery. Surviving are his wife Katherine Howie Jewell; one son, James K. Jewell of Wadesboro; three daughters, Mrs. W.H. Slough of Salem, VA., Mrs. Michael Joya of Hamlet, and Katherine Jewell of Hamlet and Wadesboro; three grandchildren; one brother G.M. Jewell of Roanoke, VA.; one sister, Mrs. Marcellus Rogers of Washington, D C. Mr. Jewell was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors.
