George Cottrell was born about 1855 in Lewis County, Missouri. He married Lillian Victoria Lyon (known as Vic) of Knox County on 4 September 1877. By 1894, George had separated from Vic. He had moved to Quincy, Illinois to find work and had begun negotiating to sell the farm in Lewis County, Missouri. Before going to his brother S. P.'s home on May 28, 1894 in Lewis County, George "frequented the wine cup…which left him in a very despondent mood…." His brother was not at home, and Clara, his brother's wife, was ill in bed. Her doctor, Dr. Ellery, had prescribed morphine for her. George took the morphine from her bedside table and drank it. He died within a short time. He was 39 years old and had two children, James Clifton and Leta/Lola.
