Charlotte Gies Batterman, 91, a 74 year resident of Wenatchee, passed away Friday, February 24, 2006, at Colonial Vista Rehab Center after a brief illness. Charlotte was born February 20, 1915, at Wheeler, WA to Conrad and Anna Derr Gies. Her parents immigrated from Russia in 1913, as Volga Germans. The family settled on a wheat farm near Batum, WA where she attended grade school, graduating in 1932, from Odessa High School. On November 24, 1932, Charlotte married Elmer Batterman of Wenatchee. She was a homemaker, packed apples and worked with her husband on their apple orchard. Later, Charlotte was employed as a seamstress at several local dress shops. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith and a life-long member of the church. First at the German Congregation of Odessa and St.

Paul's Lutheran Church in Wenatchee. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was an active member of LWML. Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer in 1997; an infant son in 1938; also, 5 sisters, Alma Gies, Elizabeth Kramer, Madeline Marchel, Martha Womach and Katherine Miller; and 1 brother, George Gies, who died in Russia. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Diane Phillips (Jack) of Easton, MD; 3 grandchildren, Kimberly Dawn Campbell (Paul) of Millersville, MD, Shelly Kay Sowers of Virginia Beach, VA and Monica Lynne Phillips of Easton, MD; 3 great-grandchildren, Phillip Wade Sowers, William Herbert Campbell and Sarah Grace Campbell; 2 brothers, Henry and Clarence Gies of Spokane; 1 sister, Dorothy Case of Lacey, WA; also numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 3, 2006, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 312 Palouse St., Wenatchee. Private Interment will precede at the Wenatchee City Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, March 2, 2006, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Building Fund. Arrangements by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
