John Newton Sr. Dies
John Newton Sr. one of Golden's most esteemed citizens, died at his home on the North side Tuesday morning . Mr. Newton had been a sufferer from asthma for years , but it was only of late that his condition became aggravated and he was confined to his home. Deceased was born in England in 1854, making him 68 years of age at the time of his death. When seventeen years of age he came to America and located in Pennsylvania . Later he went to New Jersey and it was while he was in that state that he was married to Miss Annie Rowe . In 1890 the family moved to Colorado and this has been their home continuously , with the exception of five years which were spent in California . Those surviving , besides his widow are one son , John Newton Jr ., of Golden , and six daughters, Mrs. Ethel Todd and Mrs. J . Maughan, of Golden , Mrs. W . G . Hobson, of Seattle , Wash ., Mrs. Arthur Andersoon , Mrs. J . A . Downey , of San Francisco , Calif ., and Mrs. W . A . Wiedenbeck , of San Diego , besides eleven grand children . For a number, of years Mr. Newton , was employed in the coal mines when they were in operation in and near Golden. He had filled the office of marshal and night watchman for the city of Golden for several terms and for many months was the merchant police officer. Mr. Newton was a charter member of Court Golden No. 37 , Foresters of America . He received an honorary certificate a number of years ago for service on the Golden fire department . As a public officer he was ever faithful and on the job every minute and his quiet unassuming ways won for him many friends who will miss him.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 : 30 from Woods & Sanders chapel , with Rev . Walter Jaeger , officiating . Interment will be at Golden cemetery .
