Hetty Jo Tucker Bynum, beloved wife and mother, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 4, 2012.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2012, in First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Howard K. Batson and the Rev. Chester O'Brien officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 8, 2012, in Ware Living Center in the upstairs dining room with Alan Williamson officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Hetty Jo was born on May 30, 1924, in Burkburnett, Texas, to Alva Josephine Huey Tucker and James Howard (Bud) Tucker. Her grandfathers J.T. Huey and C.S. Tucker were two of 13 founding families of Wichita Falls, Texas. The Huey family came to Texas by wagon train from Tennessee and donated land for a school and park, Huey Elementary School, in Wichita Falls.
Hetty Jo moved with her parents from Earlsboro, Oklahoma, at age 10 to Pampa, Texas. At age 14, she began working in her father's bakery, Puritan Bakery, one of the first commercial bakeries in Pampa. She was walking home from the bakery when the huge dust storm hit Pampa in April 1935.
She graduated from Pampa High School in 1944. Moved to Oklahoma City, Okla., and worked at Armour's Meat Packing in the Bacon Dept. as a boxer.
She married I.R. (Dick) Bynum on September 23, 1951, at Pampa First Baptist Church. They moved from Oklahoma City to Amarillo in the spring of 1952.
She worked at Blackburn Bro's Dept. Store as head cashier from 1968 until retirement in 1986. Then she assisted her husband with his Trailways Tour Office.
Hetty Jo supported her husband in various church and community services. She worked as Sunday school director at Pierce Street Baptist Church and Trinity Baptist Church. She was also active in W.M.U., served as teacher for G.A.'s, Children's Primary Choir, and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of F.B.C. and Hephzibah Sunday School class. She had strong faith in God, was a faithful prayer warrior and a helpmate to her husband.
She enjoyed extensive travels with her family and friends in U.S. and abroad. She loved sewing, crafts, floral arranging, reading, holidays and family gatherings.
Hetty Jo was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, I.R. and Hattie Lee Bynum; husband, I. R. (Dick) Bynum; sisters, Bonnie Grissom of Colorado and Marilyn Marie Haluska of New York; brother, Jimmie Tucker of Pampa; niece, Jamie Kathleen Tucker; brothers-in-law, John Miller, LeRoy Thomas, Carlos Grissom, Phillip Bynum, Elmer Bynum, Ralph Bynum; sister-in-law, Amy Bynum; and nephews, Joe Howard Grissom, Rocky Bynum and Ricky Bynum.
The family wishes to thank nurse Vanessa and staff at Ware Nursing Home and BSA Hospice nurse Wendy for their care of our mom.
