James is the son of James Thomas and Jane Effie (Williams) Canty. James died as the result of a fire in the Jules Morlet Bakery on Delmas Ave.

News Article: Citizens paused in their labors of re-arranging their affairs to pay respects to the memory of Malcolm Canty, the 16 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Canty, who was burned to death in the Jules Morlett Bakery building, early in the progress of the fire. Only the charred remains of young Canty wee found when searchers this morning led by Sheriff H. D. Cudabae, looked for him, after the report that he was out of the city would not be verified. He was buried yesterday afternoon in the Pascagoula cemetery. Funeral services took place from the residence of W. L. Canty at four o'clock.
