Samuel Kimbrough Barlow was born on 7 Dec 1795 in Nicholas County, KY and was a son of William Henry Harrison Barlow and Sarah Kimbrough.
In his youth in Kentucky he learned the tailor's trade. In his early twenties, around 1818, he moved to Bloomington, Monroe Co, IN.
He there married Susannah Lee on 6 Aug 1820 and they started their family.
Later, at the end of the Black Hawk War in 1832, he moved to Peoria, Fulton Co, IL. Subsequently he pioneered where Chicago now stands and then in 1845 he started west across the plains.
In May 1845 Samuel Kimbrough Barlow, his wife Susannah and their children, Jane Ellen, James, John and William, joined a wagon train that left Independence, Missouri, and arrived at the Methodist Mission at Wascopum [now The Dalles,Wasco Co OR] in early September. It was learned they would need to secure a raft for a trip down the Columbia River to The Hudson's Bay Comp site [near what is now Vancouver, WA].
Being no rafts were available and the cost was prohibitive, Samuel Barlow, William Rector and sons of Samuel decided to scout out and build a road around the south slope of Mt. Hood.
Samuel and family made it to Oregon City, OR on Christmas 1845.
Samuel K Barlow petitioned the Oregon Territory for a charter to build a road from "the dalls Mission to valey of Clackamus" and he was so authorized in Jan 1846. It became known as the Barlow Road.
Samuel and Susannah's children:
1~Sarah Barlow b 30 Apr 1820 in IN. She married Albert P Gaines 17 Feb 1839 Fulton Co, IL
2~William Barlow b 26 Oct 1822 ten miles west of Indianapolis, IN. He married 1st Rachel Larkins who died. He married 2nd Martha Partlow Allen 26 Mar 1852 at Oregon City, OR.
3~James K Barlow b 28 Jan 1826 Marion Co, IN. He married Rebecca Larkins April 6, 1848 in Clackamas Co, Oregon; she was the sister of his brother William's 1st wife Rachel Larkins.
4~John Lawson Barlow b 1828 in IN. He married Mary Miller.
5~Jane Ellen Barlow [aka Elizabeth Jane]. She married Absalom F Hedges in 1847.
Samuel K Barlow was a farmer at what is now the City of Barlow, Clackamas Co, OR; he was recorded at Milwaukie, OR in the 1850 census.
On 14 Oct 1854 he deeded his 639 acres farm to his son William and he moved to Canemah near Oregon City [now annexed into Oregon City city limits].
He was recorded at Oregon City, Clackamas Co, in the 1860 census.
He died 15 July 1867 at Canemah and is buried at the Barlow Pioneer Cemetery located just outside the city limits on property now owned by Moana Nursery.
Many efforts have been made to have the small cemetery deeded over to the City of Barlow as they maintain it for the most part at this time [May 2020].
The cemetery originally was on acreage owned by James Barlow, later that portion with the cemetery was owned by Charlie and Ethel Smith; Charlie always took good care of the cemetery during his time of owenership; then at the sale of that portion of property which contains the cemetery to Moana Nursery [owner Henry Sprenger] there was supposedly a clause in the deed that Charlie Smith swore the nursery owners were to maintain in perpetuity. They have been helpful in many ways but the Sprenger family to date has not allowed the deeded part of that property to be sold.
This cemetery was begun on Barlow acreage after the death of Samuel's wife Susannah Lee Barlow in 1852 and our hope is to keep it in good faith in memory to our city's namesake the Barlow's Family.

Inscription

"O! do not disturb the repose of the dead. Behold the pure spirit has risen and fled, Nor linger in sadness around the dark tomb, But go where flowers forever will bloom."
