In the second half of the 19th century, Col. Perfecto Armijo was a well-recognized figure in the New Mexico territory. Son of Ambrosio Armijo and Maria Candelaria Otero, he was a prominent Santa Fe Trail merchant. By the early 1870's, he handled the Armijo mercantile interests in Albuquerque as well as their ranching operations at Los Poblanos. In 1879, he became Sheriff of Bernilillo County and held that position until 1886. In 1889, he served as Bernilillo County Assessor and in 1891 he became Alderman of Albuquerque. He also served in the 1st Infantry of Volunteer Militia of Albuquerque, rising to the rank of Col. In 1905, he was re-appointed Bernalillo County sheriff by Gov. Miguel A. Otero, his first cousin once removed, when the current sheriff was removed for serious offenses. He was re-elected at the next election and served until 1908.
