Nathaniel "Doc" McAlester (McAllister) was born to Elizabeth Holcomb and William Jackson McAlester (McAllister) in Sebastian County, Arkansas, December 16, 1846. He married Mary A. Allingham in 1877, in Sherman Texas. They made their home in Indian Territory (what is now McAlester, Oklahoma) so Nathaniel could manage stores established by his brother, James Jackson McAlester. Four sons were born from their union: Brittain Goodall, Edward W., Daniel, and James Reynolds McAlester. Nathaniel and Mary were active citizens in the community. Nathaniel died December 22, 1899 at the age of 54. He and his wife, Mary, are buried at North McAlester Cemetery.

N.H. McAlester, a leading merchant of McAlester, died of paralysis. Mr. McAlester was 53 years old. He was born near Fort Smith, Ark., and came to the Indian Territory many years ago.

*Nathaniel's actual surname was McAllister. He and his brother, James Jackson, changed the spelling of their name to McAlester. As a result, it is seen written both ways.
