Harriet was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Rogers Hartshorn of Shropshire, England. She was christened on 26 August 1843 jn Clungunford and had siblings Elizabeth Hartshorn Patton (1845 - 1918), Caroline Amelia Hartshorn Britten (1856 - 1942), Stephen Hartshorn (1857 - 1916), Solomon Edward Hartshorn (1861 - 1933), and George Hartshorn (1862 - 1864). Her mother and two brothers died when she was about 9 years old. The family had been in the Toledo area for about a year. She married Joseph Adkins 15 January 1859 in Lucas County and they had Richard, Fred, Claria, Mary, Lizzie, Joseph, Lathi, Edward, Jane "Jennie", Addie, and Emma. After Joseph's death, Harriet made a living as a truck gardener along with her daughter, Emma. Harriet was just weeks short of her ninety-first birthday when she died.
