A 36-year-old mother of three was beaten to death and left in the woods behind her house in Drummonds on Tuesday, according to the Tipton County Sheriff's Department. A stepson found the body of Starr Lynn Harris shortly before 8:40 p.m. Tuesday in the densely wooded area behind 57 Richardson Landing Lane where she and her husband lived with their family, said Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty. Starr Harris was apparently killed by blunt force trauma to her head and upper torso, Daugherty said. Her body was sent to the Regional Forensic Center at Memphis for autopsy. Husband Thomas "Rick" Harris, 40, said one of his four children from a previous marriage had arrived home at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, and found the back door open and a computer on the floor. No one had seen his wife since about 1:30 p.m. that day, her husband said. The family began searching the woods behind the house and found her body at about 8:30 p.m. "My youngest son was searching on a four-wheeler," Harris said. "He flipped it, and the lights shone on her body in a ditch." Starr Harris, a 1992 graduate of Munford High School who had a daughter and two sons from a previous marriage was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies canvassed the area Wednesday, speaking with nearby residents and searching the woods for evidence, Daugherty said. No one was in custody Wednesday afternoon. After ex-husband Keith Cullum heard of the victim's death Wednesday, he said he told deputies that he gave Starr Harris $1,500 in January after she requested help leaving her husband. Rick Harris, who owns lawn and house care company All About Styles, confirmed that the couple's marriage had been troubled recently, but denied that she planned to leave him. "That's ridiculous," he said. "Every marriage has issues and problems, but I loved her with all my heart and she loved me." The couple, who had been together since 2005, were married in 2007. She worked as a secretary in their family business, Harris said. The homicide is the second in Tipton County this year. The Sheriff's Department is being assisted by the District Attorney General's Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Anyone with knowledge of Harris' whereabouts earlier Tuesday is asked to call the Tipton County Sheriff's Department at 475-3300. People can also submit tips at 475-3307 or by e-mail to Funeral arrangements have not been set. (By Ryan Poe, Published in The Commercial Appeal 6/2/2010)
