John F. Todd died of cancer of the stomach at his home, No. 23 Church street, about 10 o'clock last evening. He had been ailing for about a year, but had only been confined to the bed five days.
Mr. Todd was born at Brandon, April 12, 1842. In 1861 he enlisted in company K of the 22d New York volunteer infantry. He served with this company as sergeant for two years, during which time he was engaged in the following battles: Rappahannock Station, Gainesville, Groveton, the second battle of Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, two battles at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Falmouth and Massaponax. Mr. Todd also served a year as first sergeant of the 1st Vermont heavy artillery, stationed at Port Hudson, La. He was mustered out of service in 1865.
Mr. Todd had been in business in this city for about 30 years. During the six years previous to his illness he conducted a fruit store on Center street.
He is survived by a daughter, Miss Fannie, a son, F.G., and a brother, J.W. Todd, all of this city; five sisters, Mrs. W.P. Kimberly of Grand Island, Neb., Mrs. D.M. Barrett of Mackinaw, Mich., Mrs. J.C. Armstrong of Syracuse, N.Y., Mrs. J.H. Bigelow of Springfield, Mass., and Mrs. S.D. Hopkins of St. Albans.
The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
