-FORT MILL Mrs. Kate Sturgis Adkins Bailey died on August 27, 2001. Mrs. Bailey was born June 21, 1914 in York, SC to the late Edward Sturgis and Ethel Sturgis Ferguson. Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her husband, Heyward F. Adkins who was Chief of Police in Fort Mill and by her husband Charles F. Bailey.
-Mrs. Bailey was a devoted mother and Nanny. She loved using her best linens and fine china when serving delicious foods for many family gatherings. She was an excellent cook. She catered many weddings, never taking any shortcuts but always going to great detail with each recipe she prepared. She modeled excellence and etiquette.
-Mrs. Bailey was a member of Carolinas Cornerstone Baptist Church of Fort Mill. She taught children in Sunday School before her retirement from M. Lowenstein of Rock Hill, SC. She also worked for Mrs. Mears in her dress shop in Rock Hill until she was 80 years old.
-A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:30 PM Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at Sisk Memorial Baptist Church, 119 Massey Street in Fort Mill, SC with the Reverend Dr. George R. Dye and Reverend Jackson Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill, SC.
-Mrs. Bailey is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald H. `Cotton` and Frances Adkins of Fort Mill, SC; a step-son and his wife, Rev. and Mrs. Harold Jackson `Jack` Bailey of Hendersonville, NC; and a step-daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. J. Carlton Wells of Charlotte, NC.
-Mrs. Bailey's grandchildren include: Steven Adkins of Fort Mill, SC, Chris Wells of Statesville, NC, Ashley Adkins Ringlien of Charlotte, NC, Lisa Bailey Morris of Charleston, SC and Carla Wells Patton of Augusta, GA. Mrs. Bailey also has eight great grandchildren.
-The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at Wolfe Funeral Home, 314 Spratt Street, Fort Mill, SC and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald `Cotton` Adkins , 109 Marshall Street, Fort Mill, SC 29715.
-In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolinas Cornerstone Baptist Church, PO Box 938, Fort Mill, SC 29716 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Mid-State Chapter, PO Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.
-She was a beautiful lady who demonstrated her love by serving her family and friends. Her family often described her as `our china doll.` We will miss her greatly but know she is in a much better place.
-Wolfe Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Bailey.
