Crossville Chronicle September 16, 1937: Marshall Roach, aged about 75, was hit by a truck driven, it is claimed, by Silas Bennett and so seriously injured that he died in the office of Dr E W Mitchell late Tuesday evening. The accident occurred at 5 p.m. about 1/2 mile from Mayland on the road leading from Mayland to Pleasant Hill. The man was riding a horse which was killed instantly. After visiting the scene, Sheriff Sam Ryan made the following statement to the Chronicle: He said that evidence was plain that the truck was some 3' past the middle of the road on the wrong side, the truck had skidded 19 steps from the point where brakes were applied to the point where the truck hit the man and horse, and the man was knocked 8 steps. The information available is that Mr Roach was riding his horse on the way home, was on the right side of the road when the truck hit him. He suffered a fractured skull along with other injuries. It chanced that Lawrence Pugh came aong soon after the accident and took the injured man in his car and carried him back to Mayland. The Bilbrey Bros ambulance was called and Mr Roach was brought to Dr Mitchell's office where he died shortly after 7 o'clock. The truck is said to belong to J C Kilgore.
