JASPER BAKER Obituary
August 21, 1919 - May 15, 2016 WILBURTON Jasper N. (J.N.) Baker, 96, formerly of Wilburton, OK, arrived in Heaven on May 15, 2016. He was born in Bokchito, OK on August 21, 1919. He graduated from Atoka High School, then received BS and MS degrees from OSU, and a Ph.D. from University of MN. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Helen Dunlap, whom he found in the church choir at Stillwater, OK. He has lived for the last several years in Denison, TX. J.N. is survived by one son, Bob Baker and wife Tommie, of Carmichael, CA; three daughters, Sally Moody and husband Mike of Georgetown, TX, Betty Rutledge of Trenton, TX, and Donna Groves and husband Mike of Sanger, TX. He was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Wayne Rutledge. Additionally, he is survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Thelma Dunlap of Bartlesville, OK, and Fumiko Dunlap of Midwest City, OK, and many nieces and nephews. J.N. was, first and foremost, a servant of Christ in whatever he did. He was a Deacon and Sunday School teacher in the Baptist church, and a member of Gideons International, for many years. He spent a life-time as a soldier, enlisting in the 45th Infantry Division, Oklahoma National Guard as a private, in high school, and retired as a Major General and Division Commander, after serving in the US Army in WW II and the Korean War. Decorations include: Silver Star, Bronze Star. He worked in education administration and development with OSU, Eastern Oklahoma State College (President), Texas State Technical Institute, and Kiamichi Area Vo-Tech. He was involved in multiple civic and community activities. He touched many lives thru his example and acts of kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Gideons International, First Baptist Church of Wilburton, or Community North Baptist Church of McKinney, TX. A viewing will be held at Waldrop's Funeral Home (Wilburton, OK) on May 20th from 8am to 8pm, with family visitation from 6pm to 8pm. The funeral will take place at Wilburton First Baptist Church on May 21st at 11am, followed by a graveside service with military honors. Services under the direction of Waldrop Funeral Home, Wilburton, Oklahoma.
