FLOYD FAMILY EARLY HISTORY

THE FLOYD BROTHERS left Wales after John Bunyon was thrown into Bedford jail because of religious persecution (1666) and came to Virginia. Just where their first home in the country was, has not been proven they are later found in Safford, King Willlam and Fauquier which was probably the same ground but in those counties as they were organized. Henry Helm Floyd was the third Henry Floyd in succession. Whether Henry Floyd the immigrent was I do not know but when I was a little girl I saw an old letter that some cousin brought to show my mother, which told about the county-wide birthday party that was given to the first Henry Floyd in Fauquier Co. when he was 100 years old and grandmother said he lived to be 103 years old. His death was probably before his son left in 1780. Grandmother said, that his wife was a Miss Bruce from Scotland the Floyd family called his son Henry Bruce Floyd.

Two brothers, Nathaniel and Walter, (sons of John Floyd) were the first of the name in America. Walter patented in 1633, 400 acres in Martin's Hundred in Virginia. In 1637 Nathaniel patented 400 acres in the Ilse of Wight. Of three descendents William was the Ancestor of the Kentucky Floyds. He settled in Amherst Co. Va, married Abigail, daughter of Robert Davis, a large landholder on the upper James River, who married a half breed Indian girl of great beauty. They had tvelve children. The Eldest son John was born in 1751 in Amherst Co. Va. He married a Miss Burwell Stewart and went to Georgia. They were ancestors of Mr. J. Adger Stewart, president of the Plison Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

In 1779 John Floyd came to Kentucky with his second wife, Jane Buchanan Floyd, and his brothers, Robert, Charles, Isham and his sister Jemima Buchanan and Abigail. The three Floyds joined Gen. George Rodgers Clark's expedition. John Floyd vas killed by Indians in 1781. He is buried near Louisville, Kentucky. His son George Rodgers Clark Floyd is buried there. His son John went back to Virginia and became Governor.

The three brothers Frederick, Charles and William Floyd came from Wales to the colony of Virginia about the year 1675 and settled in what is nov Accomac Co. They were of Wales, and some say decendents of Llywelyn (but I can find no proof of that). Fredrick Floyd left no living issue.

Grandmother Robertson said that the Floyds came to America during the religious upheaval when John Bunyon was thrown in the Bedford Jail in 1660.

(From an old letter) "Henry Floyd was a Welshman and came to America long before the colonies revolted. He had but two children, Henry and a daughter named Nancy. I think he celebrated his 100 birthday in Fauquier Co. Virginia.
