Lola Ann Barnes Henderson

Lola was born December 3, 1923, in Royal, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Charles and May Riley. She attended Southwest Missouri State and graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Education. She received her Masters of Education from University of Missouri in August 1963 and received her Counselor's Certificate July 1963. She taught in the Greene County district for 18 years, many of them in the Springfield School District at Jarrett Jr. High School. She was Director of Testing in Cottey College, Nevada, Mo., and retired from there in 1965. She started her teaching career in the sand hills of Nebraska when she had just graduated from high school and was attending college while teaching. She was the Salutatorian of her class and had earned a scholarship to any of Nebraska's Teacher Colleges and to Grand Island Business College. She excelled in the business world but her first love was teaching and so she pursued that career path. She was the President of Greene County Teachers Association in the mid 1950's and worked tirelessly for better wages and working conditions for teachers. She was a member for life of the National Education Association.

She was married to Jerold Barnes in 1944 and they had two daughters, Julie Fender and Diana Barnes. They were divorced in 1962. She married Wayne A. Henderson December 31, 1964. She and Wayne enjoyed many years together traveling and enjoying their grandchildren.

Wayne preceded Lola in death in 1995. Her daughter Julie preceded her in death in 2005.

Lola is survived by her daughter, Diana, Overland Park, Kan.; her grandchildren, Todd Fender (Melanie), Kansas City, Mo., Brian Fender (Sinead), Joshua, Texas, Heather Mory (Kevin), Gladstone, Mo.; and eight great-grandchildren, Sean and Joshua Fender, Garrett, Clayton and Anson Fender, and Rachel, Cayla and Cale Adamson.

There is no visitation planned. There will be graveside services in Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kan., Thursday, June 3, at 1 p.m., where she will be placed beside the love of her life, Wayne. The only person she loved more than Wayne is Jesus.
