Tobe D. Wood, son of Maj. John H. Wood and a native of San Patricio County, became a widely known ranchman and breeder of both fine cattle and thoroughbred horses. Wood was the original breeder of Sussex cattle in Texas, acquiring them in 1898 from a breeder in Tennessee. His ranches, in Victoria and Refugio counties, covered many thousands of acres.
