Lieutenant Robin R Skene, one of the first members of the Royal Flying Corps, was buried in the churchyard after crashing in his Bleriot monoplane shortly after take-off from Netheravon, Wiltshire, in 1914 on August 12 en route to Dover and France at the start of the First World War. He and mechanic Air Mech Raymond Keith Barlow were the first members of the Royal Flying Corps to die on active duty and among the British first casualties of the war.
