CORBETT RITES SATURDAY

Funeral services for A. W. Corbett, 1621 Berkeley Road, who died Wednesday noon in Ottawa, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel. They will be conducted by the Rev. Stephen J. Williams, pastor of the First Congregational Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to a memorial fund to be established in the First Congregational Church or to the Retarded Children's Center.

Arthur W. Corbett, M.D., whose practice of medicine and surgery spanned a 50-year period, was a versatile family doctor and one of the best known in the area. The son of William and Mary Williams Corbett, both members of long-time Lyon County Welsh families, he was born Nov. 13th, 1882, in the home of his parents at South Avenue and Congress Street. During the years he attended school he was employed in several stores, among them the Palace and Hancock and Bang clothing stores, and for a time he was a night clerk at the Mit-Way Hotel. Later he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad, first as a time keeper then, during summers, in the Division Superintendent's office. He also was a secretary of the old Fair Association and assisted the late Charles Reeble when he directed that organization.

After his graduation from Emporia High School, Arthur Corbett went to Louisville, Ky., to enroll in the school which became the University of Louisville - Kentucky School of Medicine while he was completing his course. His post graduate study was at New York University. In 1911 he returned to Emporia and opened an office on the east side of Commercial Street, in the 500 block, and four years later, on Oct. 27th, 1915, he was married to Ethel DeLong in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. DeLong, northeast of Emporia. He and his family lived for many years at 1112 State St., and in 1929 moved to the present home, one of the first in the Beverly [Berkeley] Hills addition.

Dr. Corbett had practiced in Emporia from the time he had completed his training until the time he retired, except for a brief period during World War I, when he served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps. For most of those years he shared an office at 517-1/2 Commercial St., with Dr. O. J. Corbett, his brother, and Dr. Loy Harris, dentist. He was appointed a Santa Fe surgeon in 1929 and was a long-time member and past president of the medical staffs of both local hospitals. His professional memberships included the Lyon County Medical Society and the Kansas and National Medical Associations. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, which he served both as moderator and deacon, and a member of all local Masonic bodies and the Scottish Rite in Topeka.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, O. J. and Edgar Corbett, and he is survived by a wife and a daughter, Miss Barbara Corbett, of the home; one son, Robert Meade Corbett, Topeka; two grandsons, David and Robert P. Corbett, Topeka, and two nephews, Winton Corbett, Purdy Station, N.Y., and John Corbett, Kansas City, Mo.
