Thank you to Findagrave contributor AAndrewsRF (47740279) for the following:
Janet Taylor MacFarlan was the sister of the wealthy Scotsman John Taylor, Jr. of Cheraw whose body was first buried in the Presbyterian churchyard, then exhumed by his nephew almost 3 months later to be transported downriver to another cemetery. John Taylor, Jr, although he was married to Justina Henrietta Maria Kelly Campbell (her first husband was Lt. Robert Campbell of Scotland and
Jamaica), since she died shortly after their marriage, they never had children. Taylor raised Justina's daughter Anna Maria Campbell (first wife of Rev. John Caulkins Coit) after her mother died.
As John Taylor, Jr. had no heir, he brought his nephew John Taylor MacFarlane (Janet's son) to America so that he could inherit his uncle's estates. Unfortunately, the nephew was also killed in the explosion of the Richland in
1849 and neither body was ever found.
So John Taylor's sister Janet left Scotland and came to Cheraw with her three daughters and another son, Allan MacFarlane (whom Taylor had educated at the best American universities) to inherit her brother's estate. Janet's son Allan was very successful and instrumental in building the infrastructure of South Carolina.
