Dorothy Mae Johnson McCarty, known by all who loved her as "Dottie," age 87, of Delaplane, Virginia, left us early on June 8th, 2009. Dottie was for more than fifty years the wife of Dr. Dennis P. McCarty and will always be remembered as a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend.

Dottie was born the 4th of July, 1921 and grew up in Ozark, Alabama, the daughter of the late Joseph Howard Johnson and Thelma Brown. She was a graduate of Auburn University and subsequently accepted a job with the State Department which brought her to Washington, D.C. in the mid 1940's. In 1949 she married the love of her life, Dennis P. McCarty of Delaplane, Virginia, who shared the same birth date, the 4th of July. Dottie raised her family of four boys in Front Royal, Virginia where her husband was a surgeon for 23 years. A former member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Front Royal, she has been a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Delaplane for the past 30 years. Dottie loved painting, entertaining, gardening, and grandchildren. She gave to others by being a substitute school teacher, an avid member of the Front Royal Garden Club and serving her parish alter guilds.

Proceeded in death by her husband, Dennis P. McCarty, and a brother Van Dyke Johnson of Alabama, Dottie is survived by four sons, Daniel L. McCarty of Front Royal, Virginia, D. Neal McCarty of Silver Spring, Maryland, D. Page McCarty and his wife Julie of Delaplane, Virginia, and D. Jay McCarty and his wife Josie of Clifton, Virginia. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, all of whom loved her dearly and will cherish her memory.

Dottie's life will be celebrated at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Delaplane, Virginia on Saturday, June 27th at 11am where Dottie and her late husband Dennis will be interred together. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be made in Dottie's memory to either The McCarty Scholarship Fund, C/O Emmanuel Church, 9670 Maidstone Road, PO Box 126, Delaplane, VA 20144 which promotes higher education in the church community or to Fisher Center Alzheimer's Research Foundation, One Intrepid Square, West 46th St. & 12th Ave., New York, NY 10036.
