Grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois. Attended Washington University of St. Louis (declared major: pre-med), but was acquired at Age 18 by the St. Louis Browns in September 1943. The move was described in newspapers as "building for next year."

Saw action in only one game in 1943. On September 27, in game 2 of a double-header, he entered the game as a pinch-runner and scored the tying run in a ninth-inning rally. The Browns would score one more to beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 7-6.

Unfortunately, Henry's professional baseball career would not have a "next year"; he was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in November 1943.

His family lived in East St. Louis before moving to a home built by Henry in 1960, in nearby Belleville. Henry lived there with his wife until his death in 2001.

Henry and Jacquelin Schmulbach had four children, all living as of Jan. 2017:
Thomas, Susan, Nancy and Kimberly.

Affectionately addressed as "Papa" (PAW-paw) by his grandchildren.

Obituary, St. Louis Post Dispatch, May 5, 2001:
Henry A. "Hank" Schmulbach, 76, retired foreman for Mobil Oil and self-employed construction contractor, died Thursday. Visitation 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Kassly Mortuary in Fairview Heights. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church. Burial in Valhalla Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Memorials to St. Augustine of Canterbury School Endowment Fund.
