Esther Coffin married William Starbuck 9 Sep 1806, for which offense she was disowned by New Garden Friends Meeting, NC, for "marriage out of unity." She was received back into membership by her own request in 1809. In 1811 she was granted a certificate to transfer her membership to Whitewater Friends Meeting, IN. She apparently sided with the Hicksites during the Hicksite separation. The loss of the Chester Friends Meeting records (Indiana) from 1828 to 1835 make it impossible to know for sure when the Orthodox Friends disowned her. However, she does appear in the Whitewater Friends Meeting (Hicksite) records as follows: In 1838 she condemned her marriage out of unity (she had married Jesse Gardner 13 Sep 1836 in Wayne Co., IN). In 1853 she was complained of for not attending meeting and for "living in a state of separation from her husband," for which she was later disowned by the Hicksite meeting.

William Starbuck and Esther Coffin were the parents of at least seven children: Mahala, Abigail, Elihu Coffin, Asa, Esther Jane, Sally and Nathan.
