Vernon Hansen was born July 19, 1910, the seventh of thirteen children, near Alsen in rural Clay County, South Dakota, to parents Peter & Gertie (Kegarice) Hansen. He died July 21,2002 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Centerville, South Dakota at the age of 92 years and 2 days. Vernon was baptized in the Danish Church of Greenfield and attended Rockfield school in Garfield Township. In the tradition of his father, he farmed for several years. Vernon also worked as a carpenter, roofer, and construction worker. He lived most of his adult life in Beresford where he raised his four children. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Burdette Eugene Hansen, and nine brothers and sisters. He was buried in Rockfield Cemetery, rural Beresford, South Dakota next to his parents, his great-grandparents and many other Hansen relatives.
