Professional Football Player. For nine seasons (1950 to 1958) he played at the position of linebacker in the National Football League with the Chicago Cardinals and the New York Giants. Born William Ray Svoboda in Wichita Falls, Texas, he attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he played collegiate football and was Team Captain with the Tulane Green Wave football team. He was selected by the Chicago Cardinals in Round 3 (29th overall) in the 1950 NFL Draft. During the course of his career, he had 102 games played, 95 games started, had 9 passes intercepted on defense, and 102 yards were returned, and 43 longest interceptions returns. He also played in the 1953 Pro Bowl. He played a total of four seasons (1950 to 1953) with the Chicago Cardinals and five seasons (1954 to 1958) with the New York Giants before retiring following the 1958 season. After his playing days, he owned and operated a successful beer and wine distributing firm. He died suddenly at the age of 51 when he suffered a heart attack while jogging near his home in Houma, Louisiana.
