Funeral services for Joe Houston (Big Sodie) Harthcock, longtime Holmes County farmer, were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 31 at Harland’s Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Frank Marquis was the officiating minister, assisted by the Rev. John Sproles.

Mr. Harthcock died Saturday, January 29 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. He was 88. He was a resident of Madison.

A native of Holmes County, Mr. Harthcock was a son of the late Mr. Houston and Mrs. Lillie Wade Harthcock. He was a member of Harland’s Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Emmette Harthcock of Lexington: two daughters, Mrs. Winfred Marquis and Mrs. Mildred Petty, both of Jackson: two sisters. Mrs. Maude Hearn of Lexington and Mrs. Louise Abernathy of Flora: twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and nine great- great-grandchildren.

Interment was in Harland’s Creek Cemetery with Southern Funeral Home of Lexington in charge of arrangements.

Active pallbearers were Allen Key, Monty Greer, Scotty Greer, Tony Chisolm, David Woodward and David Blackledge.

Honorary pallbearers were James Harrell and Frank Marquis, Sr.
