Olivia "Roxie" Mae Smith Cherry, 80, born February 26, 1930, said farewell to family and friends on May 21, 2010 to go home to be with her Lord.
Roxie, the eldest child of Alice Florence Smith was born in Dover, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by six of her siblings; Jackie, Marie, Mary Lou, Clare (Baby Doll) Charlie and Bud. One sister, Cora Reed of Oklahoma City, OK and an aunt, Minnieola Smith survive her.
Roxie was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Tanessa Singleton and Sherrie Anita Prince Diggs.
Roxie leaves behind her husband of 52 years, Ruby Cherry and three sons of this union, Ruben and his wife Valerie of Baltimore, Maryland, Anthony and Ronald Cherry of San Antonio and from her first union, she leaves 5 daughters, Jeweldine Holloway and her husband, Willie, of Atlanta, GA, Phyllis Turner of Tampa, Fl, Shirley Singleton and her husband Syl, of Roswell, NM, LoLetia Marshall of Clearwater, FL and Deborah Malbon and her husband Rick of Virginia Beach, VA. 20 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews also mourn her passing.
An active member at Freedom Chapel at Lackland Air Force Base, Roxie served as a Sunday School teacher for over eight years. A woman of substance, she was known for traveling the roads to see her family whenever the urge hit. She had a love for life and an adventurous spirit. Roxie loved playing board games, passing a passion for games of strategy to her children who spent countless hours playing games like Scrabble, Yahtzee, Bingo, Monopoly and various card games with her. She loved to dance and enjoyed participating in American Legion activities along with her husband later in life. Roxie was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxillary, assigned to T-Patch Post 568 for the past 19 years.
A victim of Alzheimer's, Roxie spent her last eight years as a resident of Princeton Place Nursing Home, where she was loved and cared for by a truly wonderful and dedicated staff.
We know that she is in her glory - no more pain - no more suffering. "Farewell Beautiful Lady.
