A traffic accident that killed two Columbus residents and critically injured another is still under investigation, according to Florida authorities.

Edward Boland, 33, and passengers Cassandra Brown, 14, and Lakotah Slaughter, 15, all of Columbus, were involved in a car accident near Orlando Wednesday morning.

Boland, a family friend of Slaughter, was driving the teens to visit Slaughter's vacationing sister in Pensacola, according to Trooper Kim Miller, public information officer for Florida State Highway Patrol.

Boland's southbound vehicle crossed the median on Interstate 95, flipped and landed on top of a northbound car, driven by Madeleine Grainger, 59, of Melbourne, Fla.

Boland and Grainger died at the scene. Brown and Slaughter were taken to an area hospital, where Brown later died.

Miller said that Slaughter was still in critical condition Friday afternoon.

Investigators are awaiting test results to determine the accident's cause, she said.

Central Middle School, where Brown was a student, is preparing to help students cope with the loss of their classmate when they return from spring break next week.

Larry Perkinson, student assistance director, said a discussion with school officials would be held Sunday to determine how best to help the grieving students.

School counselors, from Central and other schools, will be available to help on students' first day back.
