Clothier, founder of Brooks Brothers. The company began in 1818, when Henry Sands Brooks bought a building and set up shop at Cherry and Catherine Streets in downtown New York City. His son Henry continued the business and eventually brought in his younger brother Daniel H. The company then became known as H. and D.H. Brooks. When the younger Henry died in 1850, Daniel brought in 3 other brothers: John, Elisha, and Edward, and the name became Brooks Brothers. Customers of the 4 surviving brothers included Civil War Generals Hooker, Sherman, and Sheridan, and Presidents Lincoln, Grant, and Theodore Roosevelt. The company stayed in the family until 1946. Although the 5 sons of Henry, the "Brooks Brothers," rest in Green-Wood Cemetery as does his wife, the founder himself lies with his ancestors in Sands Point Cemetery.
