Leonidas was born to Alfred Livingston b 1804 Greene Co. Ga. His grandfather, Adam Livingston came to this country in 1760, and settle in Pa. with the Grier family who had come over from Northern Ireland with him. The family were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Adam served in the Revolutionary War. In 1861 he joined the Confederate Army with Cobb's Legion, and in March 1862 joined the 42nd Georgia, and was paroled May 24, 1865 in Atlanta. He was the Vice President of the Georgia Agricultural Society for many years. He served four years in the State Legislature from 1876 to 1880. He served one term as Senator from the 27th Senatorial District. In 1890 he was elected to the 52nd Congress.

Leonidas married Martha C. Griffin December 28, 1849. Nine children were born to this marriage.
