The following was submitted by Barbara Ann Vickery 7/30/2017. Martha McClesky Paxton died in 1863 at the family plantation on Spanish Creek in Camden County, GA. The Civil War was in progress and she was buried in an unmarked grave at Spanish Creek Plantation by her family. David Brown Paxton, told Ruth Paxton Adams, that the reason for marking was looting of graves of prosperous in search of any jewelry buried with the dead. The family planned to mark her grave after the war at Spanish Creek, but things changed and it is at least fortunate that her grandson left this marker in Folkston as a record of her existence.
