British entertainer. Music hall singer and songwriter of comic and motto songs, he was universally known as "Handsome Harry Clifton". In 1864, he composed and sang the popular song "Pretty Polly Perkins of Paddington Green". The song was known throughout England at the time and was taught to school children. It was also adapted for the USA by Clifton during the American Civil War, re-titled, !Polly Perkings of Abington Green" (Georgia). A draught of the work is now held at the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
