He was born November 29, 1853 in Erie County, Ohio and was a resident of Lake County for a large part of his life. He came to Lake County from Waukesha County, Wisconsin around 1885. In his earlier days he was employed by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railway until he retired.
He was the son of William Hines and Mary Ann (Brockway) Hines Buzzell. About 1889, he married Amanda Julia Smith of Illinois. They later divorced.
He and Amanda had three sons: William, George and Lawrence Hines; Two daughters: Syvilla and Rosella Hines.
David had three brothers: Elijah, Lafayette and Hezekiah Hines; One half-brother: Anthony Buzzell; and Four half-sisters: Alma, Alzina, Lillian and Adda Buzzell.
