Nelson Cain enlisted in the US Army on Aug 5, 1862 for three years service. He mustered in at Quincy on Sept. 1, 1862 with Co. I Unit 84 of the Infantry. Sadly, he passed away in Nashville, Tenn. of disease. The weather and living conditions were terrible for the troops on either side. With no immunizations, questionable water sources, and lack of sanitation practices, many succumbed to various maladies.

His enlistment information states that he lived in Clayton, Adams County, Ill and was a farmer at the time. He was 29 and was 5'10" in height(fairly tall for that time). He was single and had a light complexion, hair, and gray eyes.

We honor his memory on this page.
