Elijah was the son of George Anderson and his wife, Jenny Bradley. He was first married in Putnam to Celia White in 1810, the daughter of Jesse White and Elizabeth Brown. His second wife in 1826 was to Judith David, widow of Micajah White, a son of Jesse White. Elijah had no biological children but raised at least three of his brother David's children by David's wife Mourning, Celia's sister. Judith David Anderson was the first person to be buried in this Anderson Cemetery.
