She was born November 2, 1921, in Wilmington Township, Houston County, Minn., to Henry and Julia (Selness) Burtness. On April 14, 1946, she married Robert "Bob" Hefte at Wilmington Lutheran Church, and he preceded her in death in June of 2009.
As a teacher, Jo began her career teaching in one-room country schools then eventually teaching elementary school in Caledonia. She loved seeing old students and learning how their lives had developed over the years. Jo was a member of Wilmington Lutheran Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Caledonia. She was also an active member of many organizations, including the Aidenn Chapter 86 Order of the Eastern Star in Caledonia, the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post 191 Ladies Auxiliary of Caledonia, March of Dimes, Houston County Historical Society, the Houston County Retired Teachers Association, the Caledonia Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and many other various organizations.
Jo enjoyed bird watching, traveling abroad, studying history and genealogy, reading and collecting old newspapers, and spending time with Bob at "the farm."
Survivors include four sons, David (Sharon) Hefte of Lakewood, Calif., Eric (Barb) Hefte of Caledonia, Bill (Jeanne) Hefte of Winona and Jim (Deb) Hefte of Rochester; seven grandchildren, Russell (Danielle) Hefte of Whittier, Calif., Erica (Kevin) Jacobson of Caledonia, Kirsten Hefte of Winona, Rebecca Hefte of Missoula, Mont., Caitlin Hefte of Portland, Ore., Julia Hefte of Winona, and Sam Hefte of Rochester; four great-grandchildren, Russ Jr. and Kaitlyn Hefte, and Ethan and Jermiah Jacobson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Wilmington Lutheran Church, Wilmington Township, Minn. Pastor James Scaife will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
