Mary Caroline "Callie" (Childers) Spencer was the wife of Hugh Johnson "Huey" Spencer. According to family Bible records, Huey and Callie were married on Thursday, 3 Aug 1899 by a Rev. Kelly (possibly Rev. Kelly McClure) at Malaga, near Stillwater, Wolfe County, Kentucky. Callie was the third child and second daughter born to Jeremiah Matt "Jerry" and Louisa (Childers) Childers. She was born on Monday, 13 May 1872 in Wolfe County, Kentucky. According to oral family history, in 1914, while enroute to Tennessee, Huey and Callie stopped their journey in Breathitt County, KY and settled there instead. Perhaps this decision was made because of Callie's condition at the time as their 11th and last child, Phenarah, was born shortly thereafter on Sunday, 10 Jan 1915. In November 1914 Huey and Callie bought the Taulbee farm located between Oakdale and War Creek on what is now Highway 541, about one-half mile north of the junction of Highway 541 and Highway 52. At that time Highway 541 did not exist as it was not constructed until the Summer of 1949. Thus, access to the farm was only by creek bed and a foot path. Callie and Huey were married for 35 years. After Huey's death in 1934, Callie made her home with her son, Oakley, and his wife, Louise (Whittaker) Spencer. On Monday, 14 Feb 1955, at about 11:00 p.m. Callie passed away quietly at home on Rock Lick Creek, Breathitt Co., Kentucky where Oakley and Louise were temporarily living due to Louise's teaching school at Rock Lick School. She was taken back to Oakdale for burial next to Huey in the family cemetery located on the property of Huey's sister, Ellis Little. May God grant you, Callie, eternal rest in His Heavenly Kingdom!
