LAMPASAS ? Services for retired 1st Sgt. William Carl Covey, 79, will be at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home Chapel in Copperas Cove with the Revs. Roger Fancher and Brandon Lanies officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow at Kempner Cemetery in Kempner.

Covey died March 11, 2004, in Lampasas.

He was born Sept. 23, 1924, in San Antonio, where he was raised and attended San Antonio High School.

Covey entered the U.S. Army in 1940 and served in World War II in the European Theater during the Normandy Invasion and in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He also served in the Korean War before he retired June 30, 1962.

His military awards and decorations included the Bronze Star Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal with three loops, the National Defense Service Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Expert Rifle Badge, the Sharpshooter Pistol Badge, the Parachute Badge and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Covey was a member of the Copperas Cove Trail Riders, the American Legion of San Antonio and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8527 in Copperas Cove.

He had lived in Lampasas since 1956 and was a member of Kempner Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Covey of Lampasas; two daughters, Sharon Lanier of Bartlett and Susan Nickson of Copperas Cove; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Covey was preceded in death by his parents, C.C. and Annie Menelly Covey.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
