White City Register 28 Dec 1922, Thu page 1 "This May Interest You"
by L. B. Dobbs
Within the corporate limits of White City, there are ten octogenarians whose combined ages total eight hundred and forty-four years, eight months and twenty-eight days.
The oldest of this group, at the time of this writing, is Susan Kerr whose age is 88 years, 8 months and 2 days. The youngest is Mrs. Margaret June Shore, 81 years, 1 month and 17 days.
These pioneer folk, who came in the days of the antelope and Indian, who broke the sod and helped to make Kansas great in ideals and noble deeds. Three of these have been residents of the state over fifty years and six for forty or more years.
In this favored group, to whom "by reason of strength" are given more than four-score years, are five women and five men. Two came from England, two from New York, four from Pennsylvania, one from West Virginia, and one from Illinois.
The group are here named in the order of their ages, from oldest to the youngest: Mrs. Susan Kerr, Mrs. Margaret Wood, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Bigham, Mr. David Bunning, Mrs. Susan J. Dobbs, Mr. Denson Hanchett, Mr. Eli Bronson, Mr. J. N. Brown, Mr. William James Walker and Mrs. Margaret Jane Shore.
Herewith are given very brief historical sketches of each:
Mrs. Susan Kerr was born April 17, 1834, in Highland County, West Virginia. Married Arnold Mollohan, July 21, 1853, who died July 11, 1864 from a wound received in the Civil War. Later she moved to Illinois. Married Samuel Kerr, March 11, 1869. Came to Kansas and settled at Marion in 1876. October 18, 1892, moved to a farm 3 miles south of White City. Mr. Kerr died in 1898, since which time she has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Emma Trees. The past eighteen years their residence has been White City.
