Mark Karuba

Mark Karuba, age 86, a resident of Erie passed away Thursday May 27, 2010 at his home. He was born May 1, 1924 in Erie the son of the late Fred and Virginia Karuba.

Mark was a 1942 graduate of East high school and was an excellent athlete having played basketball, football, and track & field. He served with the U.S. Navy during WW II and following the war he returned to school to further his education. He also began playing on semi-pro basketball teams and the CYS club's softball team. He retired from Bucyrus-Erie after working there for 32 years. Mark was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity and had served several years as their cemetery sextant and caretaker. Later in life he took up the game of golf and helped with the Church's annual golf tournament.

A lifelong resident of Erie, Mark was born and raised, along with two of his children, in a home that was located where the Church's Community Center now sits.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers; Kenneth, Leon "Cabby", Larry, and Peter Karuba and his sister Natalie Biletnikoff .

Mark is survived by his wife Nancy Simon Karuba and his children; Mark F. Karuba of Erie, Marcia Lee Karuba of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Kevin Paul Karuba of Dallas, Texas and Vivian Leigh Karuba of Erie. He is also survived by a sister Martha Gauriloff of Erie and seven grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity, 251 East Front St. Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and are invited to attend Funeral Services there Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

Burial will be in St. John the Divine Cemetery.
