Elaine Avery Nelson 1927 ~ 2010 Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many, Elaine Avery Nelson passed away May 27, 2010 of final stage Dementia,Born September 24, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Neal C. and Glennie Drakeford Avery. Attended Granite High School and graduated from Beauty College. Married Howard Cropper Nelson on Valentines Day, 1948; later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Elaine loved sports and was an avid golfer, skier (snow/water), and bowler. She loved to travel all over the world, including many times to China with her husband Howard where they were both loved and respected. She was very talented and shared her talents with many. Her grandchildren (and all their friends) called her Munga instead of grandma and she loved it. She was the mother to so many children - a family vacation was never taken where she didn't take one or two extra neighborhood children along. Every child who entered her home was always treated as one of her own. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she held many positions including Relief Society President, Homemaking Leader, where she taught everyone how to beautify their homes, and Young Women's Counselor. She loved working with the young women and they truly loved her. Survived by two daughters, Shauna (Skip) Holling, Rebecca Nelson (Robert Ridges); three sons, Frank Mecham, Lonnie and Jason (Sherry) Nelson; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mae (Truman) Rigby, Doris (Bill) and Lois (Bob) Peterson; brothers, Lamar, Wayne, Joseph Avery, and best friends, Ed and Arlene Poulsen, who have always been there for Elaine and her family. Preceded in death by her husband, Howard; daughter, Melissa Mark; best friend, Margaret Clayton; sisters, Evelyn Jensen, Iola Wagstaff; brother Neal Avery, and faithful companion, Booger (Pug). Elaine loved life, the gospel, her family and friends. She was very generous and was always willing to help anyone in need. She was a wonderful mother, and grandmother (Munga). She will be missed. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 3rd at 11:00 a.m., Midvale 8th Ward, 8350 So. Jackson St. (250 West). A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6 - 8 p .m. at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 S. Redwood Rd. and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment, Redwood Memorial Cemetery. Services under the direction of Redwood Memorial Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Primary Children's Medical Center.
