Joel Luis "Pike" Almendarez, 59, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010 at his Houston home. He was born in Houston on December 8, 1950, to John B. Almendarez and Mary C. Laredo Paiz. Pike was known to all his friends and family as a loving, giving and caring soul. Among all his tributes, Pike was the life of the party, who had a love and passion for cooking and baking, and will be remembered for his favorite chicken pot pie and delicious desserts. He enjoyed going to the beach and traveling, but he never strayed too far from the sidewalk. Raised Catholic, he was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Houston. His sidekick and best friend was his sister, Belinda. They were like two peas in a pod, and spoke or saw each other regularly. He loved all his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews with all his heart

Preceded in death by his parents, Pike is survived by his brothers, Johnny Almendarez, Jr. and wife, Linda, Victor Almendarez and wife, Kerri, Rene Almendarez, and Guadalupe Paiz; sisters, Belinda Martinez, Suzanne Yepez and husband, Eloy, Antoinette Pena and husband, Carlos, and Jennifer Ruiz and husband, Cesar, and long time family friend, Francisco Duran. Pike was a loving and caring brother, uncle and great uncle. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

His family will receive friends at 1 p.m., Friday, May 7, 2010, at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home, 6123 Garth Road, Baytown 77521, 281.839.0700. Vigil and rosary service will begin at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Crespo & Jirrels, with Deacon George Rincon presiding.
