Jack Lloyd Black was born Sunday, 30 Jun 1929 in Thomasboro, Champaign County, Illinois. His parents were Alfred Oren Black and Katherine Florence Smith. He was baptized on 17 Apr 1938 by Rev. Walter H. Teesdale at Thomasboro Methodist Episcopal Church in Thomasboro, Champaign, Illinois. He had 6 siblings; Evelyn Ruth, Helen Audrey, Doris Nell, David Gerd, Eunice Esther, Jack Lloyd, and Margaret Jane. According to military records, he was 5'8 inches tall and weighed 148 lbs. He had Black Hair and Blue Eyes. He was a member of AMVets.

Early in life, he lived with his parents and siblings in Thomasboro, Champaign County, Illinois. According to the 1930 United States Federal Census taken on 17 Apr 1930, they rented a house on Commercial in Thomasboro, Rantoul Township, Champaign County, Illinois. At the time, Jack Black was 10 months old and lived with his parents Alfred O Black (45) and Katherine F (33) and his 5 siblings; Evelyn (11), Helen A (9), Doris N (7), David G (5), and Esther E (2). At that time the houses on that street, and most of the village, did not have any house numbers and was just known simply as the "Black" house. After the death of their father, it appears they stayed in the area. According to the1940 United States Federal Census taken on 1 Apr 1940, they were still living in Thomasboro in Rantoul Township, Champaign County, Illinois. At the time, Jack was 10 years old and lived with his mother Katherine F Black (43) and his 4 siblings; Doris N (17), David G (15), Esther E (13) and Margaret (8). He probably lived with his parents until he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1950. According to the 1950 United States Federal Census taken on 2 May 1950, he lived in Thomasboro, Rantoul Township, Champaign County, Illinois. At the time, Jack Black was 20 years old and lived with his mother Kathryn Black (51), Sister Helen Warner (28) and her two children Mary Warner (10) and Linda Warner (7), Sister Eunice Faulkner (21) and her husband Harold Faulkner (21) and daughter Geraldeen (2); Sister Margaret (17) and Brother David Black (25).

At the age of 23, Jack and 18-year-old Ernestine Sinclair, daughter of Arch Earnest Sinclair and Hattie Mae Gannon, were married on 7 May 1953 in Santa Clara, Santa Clara, California. Jack and Ernestine had two sons; Daniel and Jeffrey Allen. After his marriage in 1953, they lived in California. According to military records he lived at 165 Florence St, in Sunnyvale, California between 1954–1964. They divorced sometime between 1957- 1963. After his divorce, he eventually came back to Illinois. By 1998, he was living at 516 Lot 29 in Rantoul, Illinois. It appears he lived at this address until his death.

Early in life he worked on the Illinois Central Railroad as a car inspector prior to entering the Military. He enlisted in the military from 1950 to probably 1970. Later in life he worked at the Rantoul Public Library (1996-1998).

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 17 Oct 1950 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He went to Ordnance School at Quantico, Virgina from 29 Jan - 25 Apr 1951 where he graduated the Infantry Weapons Armorers Course and was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 2111 - Infantry Weapons Armorer. He attained the rank of Sergeant on 1 Jun 1952. He completed his 3 year enlistment and was honorably discharged on 16 Oct 1953 from the Inspector & Instructor Staff (I-I) Staff, 5th 90mm Gun Battery, Marine Corps Reserve Training Center (MCRTC) in San Jose, California. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He re-enlisted on 8 Jul 1954 in San Bruno, California and served another 1 year and 3 months of service before he was honorably discharged on 25 Oct 1955 from I-I Staff, 7th Infantry Battalion, USMCR, San Bruno, California. He was discharged as a Sergeant and was awarded another National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He re-enlisted on 26 Oct 1955 for another 3 year enlistment period. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant on 1 Dec 1956. He attended the Weapons Repair Shop Machinist Course and Division Embarkation School at Quantico, Virgina in 1957. He was awarded the MOS 2161 - Repair Shop Machinist. Jack, now 34 years old, married Betty Jane Bartell (29) on 1 Feb 1964 in Clark County, Nevada presumably Las Vegas. However, they divorced soon after. According to his death certificate, he was divorced at the time of death and was living alone at that time.

Jack passed away at the age of 69 from lung cancer at 2:30 A.M. on Tuesday, 6 Oct 1998 at Provena Medical Center in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. The funeral was conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, 8 Oct 1998 in the Lux Memorial Chapel in Rantoul, Illinois. Rev. Ehme Osterbur presided over the ceremony. He was laid to rest on 8 Oct 1998 in the vicinity of Section 80 (Back Right) of Beckman Cemetery in Thomasboro, Illinois in Champaign County.
