Jean was one of four children born to Scottish immigrants, Joseph and Isabella Black Hamilton, in Winnipeg, Canada. She immigrated to the United States in Aug 1923 at age nine with her parents and siblings Joseph and Isabel (another sister, Christine, died earlier in Winnipeg). They settled in Hyattsville, Md. She married William Ralph Gray on 9 Aug 1938 in Hyattsville.

On December 12, 2000. The widow of Ralph Gray, she received her B.A. and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Maryland. Surviving children are Judith Russell and husband, John of Greenville, S.C.; Mary Ellen Wiley and husband, Jerry of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; William Ralph Gray and wife, Margie of Bethesda, Md. and Donna Collins and husband, Ed of Salisbury, Md.; grandchildren, Heather Russell Price, Dan Russell-Pinson, Meg Wiley, Ruth Snell, Alicia Gray, Elizabeth Gray, Shawn Collins, Leah Collins, Evan Collins and great-grandchild, Matthew Snell. Memorial service will be held Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Brevard-Davidson Presbyterian Church, Brevard, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Transylvania County Library, Brevard, NC. Arrangements by MOORE FUNERAL HOME, Brevard, NC.
