William Cox Smithson was born in the Pendleton District of South Carolina in 1804. His parents emigrated to Mississippi about 18?? where he and Lucinda were later married in 1831. William C. Smithson is probably the patentee on two Cash Entry Sales of 40 acres each, that were surveyed in Feb. of 1841 in Sec. 36, 14S, 17W of the Huntsville Baseline in Mississippi. After joining the LDS church, the family traveled West in 1846 with two of his brothers and a sister's family, wintering in tents in Pueblo, Colorado in William Brown's Company. They then came on to Utah Territory in July of 1847. Presumably they were right behind Brigham Young's contingent. The group was known as the "Mississippi Saints".

The Smithson brothers and their families then followed Amasa Lyman to San Bernardino, California and were known for their ability in growing cotton. William Cox Smithson was popularly known as "Buck" Smithson. In 1859, the families migrated back to Utah with Lucinda and William Cox Smithson settling in the Washington Co. area where they started growing cotton again and William was operating the Cotton mill there.
