Carrie E. (Arnold) Nicholas, daughter of William G. Arnold and Winifred (Prince) Arnold was born January 12, 1886 near Palmer, Nebraska in the Gage Valley community. She departed this life at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul, Thursday, August 12, 1971, at the age of 85 years and 7 months.
Carrie attended the Pleasant Hill Rural School and grew to womanhood in the Gage Valley area. She later attended the United Brethren College at York, after which she taught in Merrick and Howard counties.
On December 30, 1908 she was united in marriage to Glen Nicholas at the home of her parents in Gage Valley. The couple then made their home on a farm south of Palmer in Merrick County. The couple farmed until 1936 at which time they moved into Palmer to make their home. Mr. Nicholas died August 3, 1955. Carrie continued to make Palmer her home until the time of her death.
She became a member of the United Brethren Church at an early age and later transferred her membership to the First Church of Christ at Palmer, where she was an active member until the time of her death.
Carrie is survived by one son, Orville of Palmer; one brother, Ray D. Arnold of St. Paul; three grandchildren, Mrs. Nola Deffenbaugh of Liberal, Kansas, Mrs. Nelva NcNeff of Palmer and Arnold Nicholas of Kanawha, Kan., and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Glen; one daughter, Miss Thelma Nicholas; two brothers, Dr. M. O. Arnold and Hugh Arnold; one granddaughter, Phyllis, and one great-grandson, Reginald Deffenbaugh.
