DILLSBURG FARMER KILLED IN RUNAWAY
Dillsburg, Aug. 19.--Adam Wiley, a retired farmer aged about sixty years, undertook to drive a spirited young horse this evening with the result that his skull was fractured and he died from the effects of his injuries in about two hours. The horse showed that he was going to be hard to manage almost immediately after he left the Wiley home, in the upper end of the borough, when he shied and plunged the carriage into a fence. Mr. Wiley succeeded, however, in averting any damage at that time. Further down the road there is a stone pile upon which some foreigners were at work, and this caused the animal to shy again. This time he also began to kick and Mr. Wiley attempted to leap from the carriage. Unfortunately he did not succeed in clearing the wheel. His foot caught and his body was whirled around in the air. He struck the ground on the back of his head and when he was picked up he was unconscious. The physician who was summoned determined that there was a bad fracture at the base of the brain. Mr. Wiley was taken to his home where he died at 6:50 o'clock. The horse ran off and wrecked the carriage, but was not injured himself.

His tombstone says 1852-1912, but this is incorrect. He was on the 1850 census as 8 months old and his death certificate states that his death was 19 Aug 1909.
